Healthcare in Greece

The health care system in Greece offers universal coverage and is provided through national health insurance, also known as statutory health insurance and private health care. The Ministry of Health is responsible for the extensive regulation of the whole system.

Organization and governance of the national health system

The health care system has undergone major structural reforms in the last decade. In 2011, the National Organization for the Provision of Health Services (EOPYY) was established to manage a single unified health insurance fund and to act as the sole purchaser for publicly funded health services delivered by the National Health System. Private providers are also contracted by EOPYY.

Accessing health services in Greece for EU citizens

The Greek national health system provides healthcare services through a network of ESY-public/state providers and EOPYY-contracted private healthcare providers (doctors, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, etc) for primary, ambulatory and hospital care. EU citizens with a certificate of entitlement (EHIC, S form) issued by the statutory health insurance service of their state of social insurance have access to the public healthcare system on the same terms and conditions as the domestic insured population.
